Why can’t all instruments be in concert pitch?

Today we had to learn about transposing stuff from the written pitch of a clarinet to the sounded pitch, and vice-versa. I don’t get it even now.

Because in the case of some instrumentalists it’d be an enormous mindfuck.

The clarinet, for instance, comes in several different varieties

Eb Contrabass

Bb Bass

Eb Alto

Bb, A and Eb Soprano

And the saxophone comes in an equally large array

Eb Barelytone

Bb Tenor

Eb Alto

Bb Soprano/Stick of death

For the clarinets and saxophones, at least, it’s a matter of ease for the players. If those instruments were all written in correct concert pitch we’d hate ourselves.

Or at least that’s my theory.
